  50.     I surely hope NOT!! I mean its hard enough getting LAZY coders 
  51. like those at certain big companies to support the GUS, if you give them 
  52. an excuse like 'but the new GUS's support SB so blah blah' then that will 
  53. NOT help the GUS at all! Anyway MAXSBOS and 32bit Megaem are very good 
  54. programs, so you rarely have compatabitily probs anymore!

  70.     I have a GUS v2.4 with 1 meg of DRAM on-board.  I have recently 
  71. recorded a Wave file using GoldWave 2.11 for Windows using 8bit Mono 
  72. 22kHz sampling but someone told me all they heard was static when they 
  73. played it on a non-GUS card... Does anyone know if WAVs recorded on the 
  74. GUS plays back on other soundcards or not?  Also, does anyone know of a 
  75. better format to record Audio CDs for people to sample the songs and is 
  76. there actually a way to compress WAVs and for recording WAVs, what is the 
  77. best program to use with the GUS?  Thanks in advance and Happy GUSing!

  122.  
  123. I know of a Windows program which is available on the Ultrasound ftp 
  124. directories, called Cool-Editor. I think the file was called 
  125. COOLED.(zip / arj). You can record a sample, and then just highlight 
  126. a portion and press loop. I think it should do the job. It also has a 
  127. whole bunch of utilities and gadgets for editing the sound wave.
  128.  
  129. If cool-editor isn't suitable for what you want, then e-mail me back 
  130. and I'll write a program to do it using the sdk. It's not a major 
  131. task, but it could take a while since i have exams coming up soon.

  178. This sort of thing does indeed get asked a lot. My own opinion is that
  179. *all* CDROMs work. If you connect them via their own interface (be it
  180. proprietary, SCSI, or even IDE these days), then whether or not they
  181. work is nothing to do with the GUS. Of course if you want to connect one
  182. to the interface on a GUS card, then you must get one which is supported.
  183. There is no benefit to connecting via the GUS other than saving a slot
  184. in the computer - you don't get extra functionality. The only connection
  185. between a CDROM and a GUS is an audio cable, if you want to play audio
  186. CDs and have the output emerge from the GUS - you still need the audio
  187. cable even if the CDROM is interfaced via the GUS.
  188.  
  189. And while writing: whoever posted capitalized shouting about not
  190. discussing Win95, then tough - as long as the posts are GUS related,
  191. we'll discuss whatever we want.
  192.  
  193. And any chance of reducing the extra headers on each message that the
  194. new listserver is putting on, and any chance of a slightly smaller
  195. .sig from Vince, even though he does seem to have more email addresses

  206. I write again beause of my CD problem. I've connected the CD audio 
  207. output to GUSMAXs CD audio in. It sounds pretty good, but i can't get 
  208. any sound in USS, and thats why i can't digitize samples from CD-s.(i 
  209. have an Aztech CD-ROM) Please help!

  211. My other problem is Mortal Kombat 2. I have a DX2/66, but MK2 is very 
  212. slow. It loads too much at every movement. I've tried it on low 
  213. detail, but it was still slow. Does anyone know how to make it faster?

  229. I do stuff like this on occasion...
  230.  
  231. IFF you have windows, do the following:
  232.  
  233. o Sample your guitar into a .wav format.
  234.  
  235. o Use Patch Maker Lite to create a Gus Patch.
  236.  
  237. o Use Patch Manager to load your Guitar Patch into your current midi map.
  238.  
  239. o With any MIDI program, ie Power Chords, Recording Session... Create a song
  240. which plays your chord over and over. If you created the sustain correctly in
  241. Patch Maker, you can tie whole notes together for virtually infinite sustain
  242. and it consumes very little memory.
  243.  
  244. Benefits:
  245.  
  246. + Low memory overhead
  247.  
  248. + You can use your patch to play other chords in the scale without
  249. re-recording.
  250.  
  251. + You can have your chord play a rhythm without having to capture the rhythm
  252. in a .wav file.

  256. - - Takes a little fidgeting with tuning your Patch (good practice anyway)

  271. get answers. I know I have been helped on numerous occasions and wee all know 
  272. how many answers we get directly form GRAVIS :(. I intend to continue to 
  273. answer any WIN95 questions I can. I've been running the betas for months. It 
  274. is not a crap os any more than any of the pc os are. I happen to like it and 
  275. yes i have tried os/2, this is just my personal opinion, i also run linux and 
  276. like it.

  357. Some citizens on the digest are trying to say that the use
  358. of GUS with Win95 is not appropriate topic for this
  359. mailing list.  Hogwash.  Just because it isn't sitting
  360. on store shelves doesn't make it any less relevant.  
  361. With 500,000+ sold, and likely 4 to 5 times that number
  362. of installations, Win 95 is highly relevant.  I don't
  363. mind people discussing the use of a GUS in Linux
  364. even though Linux hasn't gone to mass market yet.
  365. Good or bad, Win95 will soon dominate, if not obliterate
  366. the PC/OS market.  It is in every GUS owner's best
  367. interest to ensure that the GUS is a viable card
  368. with the world's most popular (not necessarily best)
  369. operating (environment/system, whichever you prefer.

  377. I've managed to get this semi-working, so I thought I'd
  378. just post to let others know how it happened for me.
  379. (I should point out, it was anything but easy.  I
  380. had already ordered a SB-clone before I got any sounds
  381. of the GUS in Win95.)
  382.  
  383. I installed Windows into a WIN95 directory, not over top
  384. of \WINDOWS.  Of course this means a lot of extra setup
  385. and reinstallation, but I need to have my old DOS 6.2
  386. and Win 3.1 ready to run.  I made a directory containing
  387. just the version 5.48 drivers and the INF files.  I
  388. used the Add Hardware applet to add the Gravis drivers
  389. for MIDI and WAV.  Whenever I tried to install the full
  390. ULTRASND\WINDOWS directory (which includes MIXER and
  391. other stuff), the installation would bomb and
  392. Win 95 would fail on startup.  Version 5.50 drivers
  393. didn't seem to work properly for me either.
  394. I have heard from others whose installation went
  395. flawlessly.
  396.  
  397. I now have Windows support for .WAV sounds and MIDI
  398. output.  
  399.  
  400. Problems?  You bet.  
  401.  
  402. Frequently, when a 
  403. .wav sounds, it will 'skip' back to its beginning
  404. and play over again, and again again, at a high
  405. rate.  It sounds like the system is 'stuttering'
  406. on that sound.  Running ULTRINIT or some other 
  407. new .wav will always clear the sound.  (This 
  408. problem seems to occur when multitasking, or 
  409. else right on the startup sound.)
  410.  
  411. MIDI problems - the instruments do not always
  412. load.  Sometimes I have to try and retry
  413. to load and play the MIDI to hear anything.
  414. Patch Manager seems to use the wrong bank,
  415. however this could be an installation problem
  416. since I've never done a proper install of
  417. Patch Manager to Windows.  Perhaps the
  418. .INI file is not yet setup properly in the
  419. WIN95 directory.
  420.  
  421. Video for Windows playback.  There are numerous
  422. inconsistencies using VWF ver 1(d).  It seems
  423. to be playing sound, but the volume is so
  424. low.  If I move the Gravis Mixer volume slider
  425. while an .AVI is playing, the sound comes
  426. through load and clear.  But as soon as the
  427. .AVI ends, the volume is reset to ~0 again.
  428.  
  429. I haven't had very much success using MAXSBOS
  430. or the new MEGAEM in Win95, but then again
  431. those programs barely worked for me in DOS.
  432.  
  433. I've had plenty of success running games
  434. using the Win95 command prompt.  (For
  435. those who don't know, press F8 on
  436. bootup, then select Command prompt.)
  437.  
  438. I find that this command prompt is pretty
  439. good at running SBOS, mega-em, etc, and
  440. excels at running games.  I am sure that
  441. several of the action games run much
  442. quicker than they used to under DOS.
  443. I haven't found that these games run
  444. very fast in a Win95 DOS box however,
  445. just when booting to Win95 command prompt.

  466. MajorDomo politely informed me that requests must be in the *body* of the
  467. message, and *not* in the subject line as yesterday's info said. This
  468. will imply that you can give more than one command per message, but will
  469. confuse anyone who has learnt to subscribe/unsubscribe using the subject
  470. line.

  610. mods through midi drivers, but it would be really neat if you could.

  620. 2.22 as 2.2 has a number of serious bugs.  However this 'buzz' you speak of
  621. does not exist in my computer.  I do not use crappy MM speakers, but a hi-fi
  622. 200Watt amplifier and very nice floor speakers.  Perhaps your case is poorly
  623. grounded or your mic-in is on?  In all seriousness dope.mod and klfzymba.mtm
  624. sound very _bad_ on native GUS mixing due to the low sampling rate with many
  625. channels open.

  669. OS/2 demo compo. The idea here was to make a demo (DOS was OK) that
  670. "advertised" OS/2 WARP in the same way that most demos "advertise"
  671. the group that made them (the demos). So it would say something interesting
  672. and have cool music, effects, etc ABOUT OS/2. If it ran under OS/2, so
  673. much the better, DOS was ok. And, since the GUS the the demo standard :-),
  674. it wouldn't hurt to support the GUS.

  713. of trouble doing this and letting you do ANYTHING else. Thus, the example above. As
  714. for why someone would run 5 copies of Excel...Might it be because there are VERY few
  715. 32 bit apps out there to test the stability and multitasking abilities with. So one
  716. who is evaluating something has to improvise, like running multiple copies.

  872. keep it that way.  The world survives with Fords and Chevys.
